Volume 25, No. 2, April 2006

A Rectangular French Enamel Plaque, by Theophile Soyer,
signed in
monogram, Paris, circa 1884, 6" x 8".
Painted in opaque and translucent enamels over paillons and picked
out in gilt with a rider in sixteenth century costume, on a prancing
white horse, riding through a barren landscape with a twisted castle
behind, one corner with a shield bearing the fleurs de lys of
France. It is probable that this is the plaque shown by Soyer at
the 1884 Paris Salon (no. 3169) entitled: 'Cavalier de temps de
François Ier', a late example of his Renaissance work. Courtesy
W.W. Carpenter Enamel Foundation Collection.
