We will start with the basics and
have you enameling within 15 minutes. You will quickly move on to
more advanced procedures and selected techniques on both days.
If you have taken the "Intro to Enameling Workshop" before, the second day (Sunday) will have new and different procedures and techniques to learn.
By the end of
the workshop, you should have a good idea as to what you wish to
accomplish with enamel.
All tools and materials are
supplied. Participants are only expected to bring a brown bag
lunch, an open mind, and a pair of eager hands. There are fast
food restaurants close by, if you prefer.

Painting On Enamel Workshop

Materials Fee: Estimated $5 to $10 (Thin copper and pre-enameled steel tiles - pending your material choices - you may bring your own thin copper and/or pre-enameled steel tiles if you choose)
Workshop Description:
Experience Thompson Enamel painting products which will include Acrylic enamels, Enamel Marking Pens, and Carefree Lusters.
Formats will be on thin copper (for jewelry shapes) and on flat pre-enameled steel tiles (for wall works) . Learn to cut, emboss and shape thin copper into pendants, brooches, earrings forms. These will be enameled with white opaque enamel, which will be used as a "canvas" for painting applications.
Flat pre-enameled steel tiles make a good "canvas" for works to be framed and hung on the wall.

*How to prepare Acrylic Enamels for use *Mixing mediums - what they are and how to choose *How to transfer an image outline* How to apply painting products - washes, brush stroke, stippling, details, texture, sgraffito, etc. *How to mix colors - physically mixing or by layering *How to fire painting enamel products* Using a thin coat of clear enamel to create depth in your painting *Highlights and accents - using Carefree lusters and/or silver and gold foil and 80 mesh transparent enamel *Creating jewlery shapes from thin copper for painting format

Glass on Glass Classes - Enameling and Kiln Forming Workshops

Cost: $65 per session, $175 for three sessions. Discounts for groups of 3 or more (registering at the same time).
In these classes, you will learn to create from recycled and repurposed glass sources and special Thompson Enamels. Recycling 'glass into art' techniques will be taught by accomplished artist and sculptor Joseph Drury. While these techniques can be applied to enameling on any surface, the primary focus will be on learning how to apply enamels to glass for the creation of sculpture, jewelry, window hangings, bowl and plate forms. These workshops are suitable for all students beginning through advanced. Beginning students learn safety, proper ways to apply and fire the enamel. Each student produces at least one artwork per session!

Workshop Description
Students will explore forming and texturing copper and fine silver foils (thicker than are normally used) and firing them onto pre-enameled surfaces. Small plates or jewelry may be produced using the learned techniques. Some enameling experience is needed for this class.

Enameling Potpourri: Techniques, Tips, and Tricks - OATKA School of Glass
Date: January 23-25, 2010 (Saturday, Sunday, Monday)

Discounted if Beginner & Potpourri Class taken together - $800.00 for 4 Days
Experienced enamellists will enjoy the wealth of tips, tricks, and variations presented in this three day workshop. Basics will be reviewed on the first day (enameling applications, color theory, basic techniques, etc), and each student will start a small project involving various techniques, such as cloisonne, fire-scale painting, traditional and experimental embedding, overglazes, and much more. Different ways for finishing and setting/mounting a piece will also be discussed.
This class is a more inclusive format which is more satisfying than focusing on just one technique, and will allow us to adjust the class to the needs of the participants.

Our next Enamel Class is a 6 week course (Jan 23 - Feb 27th Saturdays 3 - 6 pm), taught by Katrina LaPenne, course fee $400. We learn the basics of sifting, wet working inlay, stenciling and sgraffito for both torch fired and kiln fired enamel. Experiment with colors on copper stampings, students with metals experience may bring their own silver pierced work. More advanced techniqes including cloisonne, depletion gilding, basse taille and champleve will be introduced in the class.

Our new workshop is available for open time use. You supply your metal, we will supply a reasonable amount of enamel. The charge is $5 per hour. Hours are 9am to 4pm, Monday through Friday. Saturdays and evenings by appointment. Call ahead so we can turn the furnace on.
This facility is available at $7.50 an hour. Same hours and days as small scale. Again, please call ahead so we can turn the furnace on.
